Oberhausen is a city of about 210,000 people in the west of the Ruhr, between Duisburg and Essen, in North Rhine-Westphalia. For more than a century it lived from coal and steel. Much of the old industrial land has since been reused: a former gas holder, the Gasometer, now serves as an exhibition hall, and the large CentrO shopping centre stands on the site of a former steelworks. Düsseldorf is roughly 30 km to the south.
