Cologne lies on the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia. With around 1.1 million inhabitants it is the largest city in the state and the fourth largest in Germany, best known abroad for its Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Düsseldorf is about 40 km downriver and Bonn a short distance to the south.
